Hollywood Wannabes in the Midwest, Listen up.

August 18, 2008

HOLLYWOOD WANNABES IN THE MIDWEST LISTEN UP, the state of Michigan grants the highest producer rebates in the U.S.A., up to 42% of a movie’s budget. Now will they call it Icewood, Wishigan, Frozen Wood, Michiwood, or Come-Up-With-Your-Own-Name for the next filmmaking capital.

Michigan now beats New Mexico, Louisiana and every other state in its quest to bring filmmaking to the cold north.  Actor/producer and Michigan resident Jeff Daniels was one of the driving forces behind getting this legislation passed. Yet Michigan currently lacks the infrastructure filmmakers require; sound stages, specialized venders, a large local trained talent pool and it is one of the coldest parts of the country. Of course with global warming maybe that will change. Also with the U.S. auto business in the toilet maybe TV and movies is just the thing to save Detroit. So will Michigan become a mini-Hollywood? Time will tell.
